Avon River Heritage Centre
Avon River Heritage Centre & the Avon Spirit Shipyard
15 & 17 Belmont Road, Newport Landing/Avondale, NS, B0N 2A0
avonriverheritage.com
The Avon River Heritage Society operates the Avon River Heritage Centre and Avon Spirit Shipyard in Newport Landing, on the scenic shores of the Avon River, on the site where the sloops, Lydia and Sally, landed in 1760.
During the 19th century the Avon River area became one of the great square-rigged wooden shipbuilding centres in Nova Scotia. Where we now sit was once the location of the Harvie and Mosher shipyards; between them, they built and launched 165 sailing ships during the Golden Age of Sail.
Our Museum features exhibits on the New England Planters, African Nova Scotians, Acadian settlers, the Mi'kmaw people, local home histories, family histories, Avon River ecology and is home to the Avon River Arts Society, the Full Circle Festival, the Honey Harvest Festival and Avondale Wharf Day.
Together with the arts society we host a number of culture related events, including Open Studio and Hants County's flagship art show, the Great Little Art Show, established in 1998.
Modelled after a late 18th century general store, our Planters Sea Chest Gift Shop features a wide variety of handmade products, all crafted by local Nova Scotian Artists and Artisans, as well as a selection of books on local history and the unique ecology of the Avon River area.
With a stunning view of the tidal estuary our licensed Lydia and Sally Café is open for tea & coffee by donation and for special events. Join fellow community members for Morning Coffee, hosted by volunteers, 7am - 10am, Tuesday-Friday, May through October.

I have been painting for three years, and have been working with oil paints for half of that time. I love the tactile nature of oil painting, and the challenge that comes with accurately and realistically representing the human figure. Much of my work is figurative, with a specific interest in the mythical, the historical, and the fantastical.
Despite being born and raised in Alberta, I have deep family roots in West Hants county, and I feel right at home here.

Greg Dickie
Painter
cabernet.1@eastlink.ca
Greg Dickie's love for the sea has been lifelong and comes both from growing up in coastal towns and cities and spending time on the water.
As a marine and landscape painter working in oils, Greg's landscapes are drawn from local scenes around Nova Scotia. They are based, in part, on years of hiking and canoeing in Nova Scotia's back country, time spent in the Annapolis Valley and an almost life long love of works by Tom Thomson and members of the Group of Seven. In his work he strives to capture that particular mood found in a vanishing way of life centered around quiet fishing villages or the open sea.
His work is in private collections throughout Canada, in the US, Europe and as far afield as Hong Kong.

Painting
Painting in watercolour, and sometimes in ink and wash, allows me to express the mood of a subject by texture and tone, or to tell a story with colour and structure.
I paint my surroundings both plein air and from my photographs. Over the years, I have had the privilege of taking instruction from Kay Stanfield and Jane Schlosberg, the late Richard Rudnicki and have participated in a variety of NSCAD courses.

I now work at the Bread Gallery which is how I found out about Avon River Arts. I generally paint for my own relaxation, and I enjoy giving my family and friends my work.

I don't have any formal education in art, however I have a great passion for watercolor painting. I am teaching myself, following a British watercolour artist Geoff Kersey. I work full time as a LPN, When I am not at work, I work in front of my easel, which gives me great joy. My artwork is mostly based on rustic and local Hants county scenes.

Working in the arts has always been in the cards for me. After a childhood spent creating, using whatever materials available, it was no surprise that by the age of seven I was firmly committed to living the life of an artist as I grew up.
After attending specialized art classes as a teen, I began my post secondary education studying photography and digital imaging, before shifting my focus towards graphic design, printmaking and film studies, eventually receiving a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in 2003.
Upon graduation I began teaching art to elementary and junior high students and for over two decades I have continued to work as a photographer, designer and event planner, collaborating with many artists, entrepreneurs and not-for-profit organizations.
Since relocating to the tiny community of Ellershouse over a decade ago, my artistic practice has grown to include the creation of tactile fine artworks and products that make use of natural and recycled materials. These days I primarily create using wool from local British milking sheep raised in Avondale, which I carefully hand dye prior to transforming the fibre into vibrant felted wall hangings and functional items like hats and purses.
After taking on the role of facility manager for the Avon River Heritage Society Museum in 2013, the tidal river that surrounds the historic waterfront park became an ongoing source of inspiration for my artwork, especially evident in my 2019 felted series of maps of the Avon River and the Windsor Causeway, entitled ADAPT, as well as my graphic print Year of the Salmonand the corresponding installation Ghost Salmon/Spirit Salmon, which was placed along Simpson’s Creek in Newport Landing in June of 2019. In 2020 I elaborated on this installation, beginning work the series, Spawning Fish of the Avon River, which currently includes an Atlantic Salmon, Gaspereau, Brown Trout, Smelt and a Frost Fish (also known as the Tommy Cod).
When I’m not working or creating I continue to pass along my skills and knowledge by leading fibre art workshops and demonstrations, and by actively volunteering with groups like the Avon River Arts Society and the Full Circle Festival to organize cultural events and activities in the Avon River area.
